Conquer the Big Retirement Fear

Maintaining current lifestyle…rising health care costs…running out of money.

The “big” retirement fear likely depends on who you talk to. A recently retired couple may be anxious after hearing that health care costs in retirement can average $220,000. Not surprisingly, however, Millennials, who are at a very different life stage, are only half as likely to fear rising health care costs as those already in retirement1.

What may surprise you, though, is that when it comes to the fear of running out of money, even millionaires are concerned.

According to a study by SpectrumGroup2, investors with a net worth between $1 million and $5 million rated their concern about depleting retirement funds at a 33.91 out of 100 (“0” indicating not worried at all, “100” indicating very worried). Similarly, investors with a net worth of $100,000 to $1 million rated their concern at a 47.60 out of 100. Regardless of the specific rating, the fear of running out of money is not uncommon among those with a significant level of wealth.

Perhaps the fear is rooted in the fact that people are generally living longer. Or maybe it’s because they don’t have a solid long-term financial plan in place.
